American Funds Wins Multiple Lipper Fund Awards Eight Years Running

Eight Target Date Retirement Funds and Three Additional Funds Honored

LOS ANGELES — American Funds, a family of mutual funds from Capital Group, one of the world’s largest investment management firms, has won 19 Lipper awards for 11 of its funds. This is the eighth year in a row American Funds has taken home multiple Lipper awards.

In a near sweep of the target date fund category, eight of the firm’s target date funds were honored — seven for multiple time frames and one for a single period. New Perspective Fund, SMALLCAP World Fund and U.S. Government Securities Fund were also honored. The Lipper Fund Awards recognize fund families and individual mutual funds that have achieved consistently strong risk-adjusted three-, five- and 10-year results relative to their peers.

“We are once again proud to be recognized in multiple categories by Lipper,” said Matt O’Connor, President of American Funds Distributors. “These awards are recognition of our long-term focus, low fees and objective-based investing, which aligns our firm with investors saving for or living in retirement.”

The American Funds Target Date Retirement Series® employs a dynamic approach to managing the mix of equities and fixed-income securities in their portfolios, as opposed to simply following a formula that increases the proportion of bonds held by investors nearing and in retirement.

“Retirees want their investments to provide both income and stability during their golden years,” O’Connor commented. “Our target date series is designed to lower volatility while striving for consistently superior long-term returns.”

Typically, target date funds lower their equity exposure over time as a way of managing portfolio volatility. In contrast, American Funds takes a different approach, maintaining a meaningful exposure to equities while shifting toward stocks that have a track record of paying and growing their dividends. By switching to historically less-volatile, income-oriented equities, the strategy seeks to reduce total portfolio volatility while also allowing for meaningful equity exposure that can provide retirees with the potential for capital appreciation in their portfolios.

The 2016 Lipper Fund Awards were awarded on March 22, 2016. Fund awards were based on risk-adjusted returns as of November 30, 2015.

Each target date fund is composed of a mix of the American Funds and is subject to the risks and returns of the underlying funds. The target date is the year in which an investor is assumed to retire and begin taking withdrawals. Although the target date funds are managed for investors on a projected retirement date time frame, the fund’s allocation strategy does not guarantee that investors’ retirement goals will be met. American Funds investment professionals actively manage the Target Date Fund’s portfolio, moving it from a more growth-oriented strategy to a more income-oriented focus as the fund gets closer to its target date.
