About Us

Our History

Our roots date back to 1931, when Jonathan Bell Lovelace founded our organization as a research-based group focused on helping investors in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929. Today, Capital Group has thousands of associates worldwide serving the needs of individuals and institutions. 

  • 1931

    Capital organization founded in Los Angeles by Jonathan Bell Lovelace

    1933

    Begins managing The Investment Company of America®, the first mutual fund of what will become the American Funds family

  • 1953

    Invests in Royal Dutch Petroleum — thus becoming one of the first U.S.-based firms to begin investing outside North America

    1958

    Begins managing assets using The Capital System℠

  • 1962

    Opens first overseas office in Geneva

    1965

    Develops international indices that become MSCI indices (MSCI indices are now maintained by MSCI, Inc.)

    1968

    First U.S. institutional accounts established

  • 1976

    First collective investment trusts introduced

    1978

    Begins managing non-U.S. assets for U.S. institutional clients

  • 1982

    Opens Tokyo office — our first in Asia

    1984

    American Funds Insurance Series®, one of the oldest insurance investment vehicles in the U.S., is introduced.

    1986

    Begins managing Emerging Markets Growth Fund℠ — the world´s first emerging markets equity fund

  • 1992

    First global private equity funds created 

    1993

    Hired by our first client in Africa 

  • 2000

    Begins offering investment management services for individuals in Canada

    2002

    The American Funds´ R share class, designed for retirement plans, is created.

    2003

    Begins offering investment management services to individuals in Europe

    2007

    American Funds Target Date Retirement Series® introduced

    Begins offering investment management services to individuals in Japan
